Я сегодня вечером в Москве. Мой друг маэстро Валерий Гергиев проводит первый Благотворительный вечер Московского Пасхального фестиваля, собирая средства на инструменты, которые будут адресно направлены в музыкальные школы по всей России.

This evening, I’m in Moscow. My friend, Maestro Valery Gergiev, conducts the first Charity evening at the Moscow Easter Festival, collecting funds for the tools that will be specifically directed to music schools throughout Russia.

Natalia Speaks
DOLLY JONES 25 April 2012

NATALIA VODIANOVA has entered into a debate today with bloggers and commenters who have written about her statement at this weekend’s Vogue Festival during which she spoke about the ill effects of obesity.

Involved in the CFDA health initiative and a fervent advocate of an industry that promotes wellbeing and happiness as opposed to alteration of your body in the name of fashion, she says that the comment that has been picked up upon – that “it’s better to be skinny than to be fat” – has been taken out of context by her critics and she stands by the assertions she made about health and well being.

Natalia Vodianova: ‘It’s better to be skinny than to be fat’
Russian model Natalia Vodianova proved to be the most outspoken model during the inaugural Vogue Festival, voicing her opinion on everything from NHS obesity to self-worth.
BY OLIVIABERGIN  | 23 APRIL 2012

The presentation theatre at the Royal Geographical Society on Saturday afternoon was jam-packed with Vogue Festival attendees craning to take a peek at and listen to what top models Eva Herzigova, Lily Cole, Natalia Vodianova and Jourdan Dunn had to say.

British beauties Dunn and Cole might have had the English mother tongue on their side for the discussion, but they were quickly out-talked by the Russian beauty Natalia Vodianova, 30.

Introduced on stage by Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman, who described her as one of the most successful models of the 21st Century, she dispensed the following insight into her fiery personality: “Anyone who has been in Natalia’s eye line when she wants you to do something, knows it is jolly hard to get out of doing whatever it is that she asks, and she’s used this talent, along with her profile and the contacts she has made through modelling, to raise huge sums of money for her Naked Heart Foundation.”

During the hour-long discussion, the subject of eating and healthy body image quickly came up. The spotlight was placed Herzigova, who was forced to admit that unfairly, she and her model friends were “just born with” their enviable physiques.

Cue a comment from Vodianova, who was quick to relate to Eva and added: “I respect my body, my body is my temple”. She explained further: “If I eat like a pig, I am going to feel like a pig. Sometimes I have a huge, delicious five-star dinner with my grandparents with seven courses. In the morning you wake up and you feel like s**t. If I feel like that, OK, I am not going to be able to feel good about myself.”

Intellectual model Lily Cole then offered her cultural take on body image ideals, recounting a story about how the people at a tribal dance in Botswana she attended shouted “Fatty! Fatty! Fatty! Fatty!” at each other, later realising that it was a complimentary term and that the locals must have found her own lithe physique very unappealing.

Keen to have the last word, Vodianova chipped in with: “C’mon guys, you know it’s better to be skinny than to be fat”, a comment which was met with both surprise and applause.

“NHS are fighting against obesity” she continued, “children taken away from their parents because they are too fat – read Daily Mail.”

The mother-of-three did however explain that she has been following a blood-type diet for the past five years following a bout of painful stomach ulcers. Whether than explains how she attended a reception at the V&A Museum in Givenchy Haute Couture three days after giving birth, or running the Paris half-marathon without pre-training, is only something she knows.

On the subject of a model being able to direct her destiny, Vodianova was quick to offer that: “I think it’s really important to say no in this industry actually, it’s more important than saying yes.” Admitting that she is in a privileged position where she can turn down work, she explained: “I believe it is very much about saying no, and fighting for what you think you deserve.”

Recalling how she bravely switched modelling agencies in Paris when she started out and was a “nobody”, she explained: “No matter who you are, you are somebody in fact. Always in the back of my mind, I have to do what my heart tells me and not what my brain tells me.”

Vodianova, we sincerely believe you.

Ask The Models

Four of the world’s most famous model stars, Natalia Vodianova, Jourdan Dunn, Eva Herzigova and Lily Cole, took their seats on the Vogue Festival stage this afternoon to huge rounds of applause from the audience – for a Q&A about their lives. Conversation was remarkably frank as Cole revealed how staying school was a “saving grace”, Dunn spoke about her acting ambitions, and Herzigova discussed how “this job is about other people having opinions about you – it’s always someone else’s point of view”.

“One of the problems I had with modelling was that I could never direct my path – it’s difficult being part of trends,” added Cole.

“I think I always have to do what my heart tells me and find something that suits me,” said Vodianova.

“I’ve learnt to accept my flaws – I hated being skinny and lanky growing up,” recalled Dunn of her younger years. “I think I’m fine so I’ve decided that no one can tell me otherwise. OK I’m skinny – what’s next, let’s move on!”

The group also discussed dieting, health and their respective exercise routines.

“The only diet I have ever done is the blood type diet – I have done it for five years now,” said Vodianova. “The big contracts go to the girls who are healthy – they need some sparkle.”

“I run once a year – I do the marathon for my charity,” she added. “I don’t train, I just make sure my children are the other side of the finishing line. But I change my mind with these things, once I did yoga every day for a whole year.”

As part of the original Nineties supermodel line-up, Eva Herzigova remarked that the industry has changed since she first made the model big-time.

“It’s a different time now – [the supermodel phenomenon] was a trend,” she said. “The woman was much more feminine then, and we took longer to build up our careers. Modelling is very much based on experience.”

“I think our whole culture puts values on an ideal image and people have to find their own true value of what’s important,” continued Cole.

Clipping: China, ShangArt, 15 April 2012

Met with Lorenz Helbling yesterday, Director of ShanghArt, and the cute pandas by Zhao Bandi, which I am going to take back home.

Zhao Bandi who did these pandas in Olympic colors for China Summer Olympics 2008 is another great socially responsible artist who would be a fantastic recruitment for our Love Ball China. Lorenz and ShanghArt work with him and a few other very interesting Chinese artists.

Got another sneak preview. One hour before the opening of the Wu Yiming exhibition. Wu is an artist who is still working in a traditional Chinese way with ink and paper.

I find it very appealing and colors are stunning.

Clipping: China

My first meeting in Shanghai this morning is with Zhang Huan. I met this fantastic Chinese Artist last year in April here in Shanghai when he hosted Diane von Furstenberg and her retrospective with a big dinner and party in his studio. I loved that trip so much that I stayed for the next two days and joined Wendy Murdoch at the incredible home of local acitivist, gallerist and style icon Pearl Lam. At this very small gathering Wendy encouraged me to speak a little bit about my work with Naked Heart Foundation and The Love Ball that was coming up last July.

Later, smoking on the terrace with Alex de Betak (my dear friend and the visionary behind the beauty and execution of last year’s Love Ball at Mr Valentino’s Chateau), Zhang Huan asked me if I would ever consider bringing the Love Ball to China. He mentioned that he would support me and would help me to meet other Chinese artists and to encourage them to come onboard.
